The lottery is extremely popular in the city of New Jersey, as thousands play every week and millionaires are made throughout the state and country. Since 1970, the games and cash prizes have only been getting bigger and more exciting, encouraging players from all over the world to get involved.
By 1983, the New Jersey Lottery had already created its 100th millionaire, cementing its place as an impressive lottery amongst the other big states.
The Big Lotteries
The Mega Millions and Powerball fever has certainly hit New Jersey with millions of people entering and hoping to take home the jackpot. Luck has struck New Jersey on many occasions, with some of the biggest lottery wins falling in this state. In 2013, The Powerball hit $448 million with 2 of the 3 lucky winners coming from New Jersey.
Pick 6 XTRA
This proud New Jersey lottery game has some of the best odds and a jackpot that starts at $2 million. Players can win prizes from matching only 3 numbers and upwards plus this lottery has additional features that can multiply the cash prizes by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times. To enter, select 6 numbers from 1-49 by choosing your own numbers or playing via quickpick. The lottery also has XTRA, which costs a little more, but multiplies the prizes.
The largest New Jersey Pick Six jackpot was won in February of 2001 when one lucky couple claimed a $48.9 million jackpot.
Cash 4 Life
This game seems to have taken over many of the state lotteries, proving that people love the idea of winning $1000 a day for life and can handle the second prize of $1000 a week for life. To play, select five numbers between 1 and 60 and one Cash Ball number between 1 and 4. Held every Monday and Thursday at 9pm, players have a 1 in 21 million chance of taking home the grand prize.
Jersey Cash 5 is a daily game, and as the name implies, asks that players select 5 numbers between 1 and 43. The estimated jackpot starts at $75,000 and rolls over until it is finally claimed.
Pick 3 and Pick 4 are very similar to Jersey Cash 5, however, these games are held twice a day and have a smaller estimated cash prize. You can play these games straight or as a box, meaning that the numbers either have to match the drawn numbers down to the exact same order or the numbers just need to be the same as those picked.
These games have become a favorite pastime for those seeking smaller games with great instant wins. Ticket prices vary for each game, starting at $1 and moving up to the higher stake games at $30 a ticket.
How to claim your winnings
The New Jersey Lottery has simple rules for claiming your winnings. If you have won less than $599.50, you can claim the money at any lottery kiosk, while international players will receive their payouts in their concierge accounts. This can then be drawn immediately or kept for future lottery games.
If you have won more than that amount, you will need to visit a lottery district to claim your money. International players will need to contact the lottery, but all claims must be made within 180 days of the draw. There are different rules for claiming scratch-offs wins as this must be made within 60 days.
Whether you are playing from overseas or you are a local, you will need to pay federal and state taxes.
